Vertigo

Vertigo is dizziness due to a problem with the inner ear, vetisbular system or central nervous system. Associated symptoms can include headaches, visual changes, nausea and ringing in the ears.

The reflexes responsible for maintaining balance are regulated through the inner ear and neck, and eye muscles. Any disruption of one of these areas can cause symptoms of vertigo.

Specific causes of vertigo would include: bacterial infection, medication side-effects, seizure, migranes, Meniere’s disease, tumors/cancer, vestibular neuritis, trauma to skull/spine, cervicogenic vertigo (subluxation &/or muscle tension) and BPPV.

Chiropractic Can Help

The management of vertigo depends mainly on its cause. Cervicogenic Vertigo (stemming from a spinal misalignment &/or muscle tension) and Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) generally respond well to chiropractic care.

Cervicogenic Vertigo – by correcting spinal misalignments (subluxations), particularly in the neck, often times vertigo is relieved.
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) – this is the most common type of vertigo, caused by free floating calcium carbonate crystals in the inner ear. BPPV is easily diagnosed by your chiropractor by a simple test, and can often be treated successfully using simple repositioning techniques. These repositioning techniques have shown to be effective, with many studies showing as high as 90% success rate.
