Scoliosis

Teenage girls

Scoliosis seems to mainly affect girls between the ages of 8 to 18.

Scoliosis is an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. It begins as a postural distortion and may become a permanent deformity. Allowed to advance, it may interfere with the lungs, heart and many other vital organs.

Three Causes

  1. Congenital genetic predisposition
  2. Habitual behavioral routines
  3. Idiopathic unknown cause

Regardless of cause, early detection can be helpful.

Since I started my treatment, my posture has drastically improved, my chest pain had stopped, I’m breathing easier, and I can exercise without pain. I have had significant improvement in my overall health and mobility. I would strongly recommend Dr. Lardi as a chiropractic professional. I am in my 40’s and have scoliosis, and the results of her treatment has far surpassed my expectations and has greatly improved my posture and mobility.

Obvious Clues

An alert parent may notice that a high shoulder or low hip make clothing fit poorly. Or uneven shoe wear offers a clue. Back and leg pains may develop but are often dismissed as “growing pains.”

Wait and See?

Allowed to run its course, scoliosis may often worsen. Severe cases may involve unsightly bracing or surgery that attaches steel rods, forcing the spine to straighten.

Natural Approach

A schedule of specific chiropractic adjustments may help improve the function and structure of the spine. As muscles are retrained and strengthened, posture may improve.

I had been told for 25 years that there was nothing I could do to “fix’ or “correct” my scoliosis. Well I’m happy to say that after a year of treatment with Dr. Lardi I am forever changed….it’s MY jaw dropping at the visible changes. I just can’t BELIEVE how different I feel in one year. I came to Evolve for Chiropractic care to hopefully have some physical changes occur, but I got more than that…..my whole spirit has been changed. I am forever grateful.

Scoliosis Success Story

“Saying I was a skeptic as I sat in Dr. Laura Lardi’s office that first visit is an understatement. I had been told for 25 years that there was nothing I could do to “fix’ or “correct” my scoliosis. Well I happy to say that after a year of treatment with Dr. Lardi I am forever changed.I came to Evolve for Chiropractic care and to hopefully have some physical changes occur, but I got more than that…..my whole spirit has been changed. I am forever grateful.”~ Shannon Andrews

I met Dr. Laura Lardi at a wellness seminar hosted at Goodness Me. She was so passionate about everyone being given the chance, the knowledge, the tools, to be the healthiest “whole” person one can be. She also explained that if your whole body; mind, muscles, tissue, nervous system etc wasn’t working at optimal levels YOU are missing out on having a body that protects and promotes good health. So I decided to meet up with her to chat about my own personal story.

I was diagnosed with scoliosis around the age of 13 (now age 37). I was told there was nothing I could do, other than hope that the spinal curves didn’t progress over my life to require rods and braces. So I lived in fear, always holding a hand-held mirror up to my bathroom mirror to continuously self-diagnose if the curve had changed.

I was, ALWAYS aware of my scoliosis. My curves were significant and I felt very visible in bathing suits, tighter fitting tops and dresses (hems) and maybe not as noticeable in other clothing, but I felt that was ALL people could see. Also because of the curvatures in my spine my hips were off by an 1″, so if I was over tied or not paying attention I had a slight limp. I only knew of this limp when co-workers or friends would suddenly out of the blue ask me if I hurt my ankle (and I cringed at that sentence as if they had just “outed” me and my secret)

So let’s fast forward, four pregnancies (of toll on my body) later and I’m finally ready to work on me. Saying I was a skeptic as I sat in Dr. Laura Lardi’s office that first visit is an understatement. I had been told for 25 years that there was nothing I could do to “fix’ or “correct” my scoliosis. Well I happy to say that after a year of treatment with Dr. Lardi I am forever changed. I’m smiling ear to ear as I share this part of my story. My shoulders are now even, I went from a 20lbs weigh difference on one leg to a 2lbs difference. My limp is more of a stylized walk (lol) I wish Chiropractic Care was more widely suggested to patients via their doctors. I can’t imagine how different my journey would of been if I had started this as a teenager. It’s actually too much to think about. It would have been life changing.

So….do I still check my back out in the mirror? YES I do. Maybe more so now, because it’s MY jaw dropping at the visible changes. I just can’t BELIEVE how different I feel in one year. I came to Evolve for chiropractic care and to hopefully have some physical changes occur, but I got more than that…..my whole spirit has been changed. I am forever grateful.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Isn’t a certain amount of sideways curvature normal?
Any type of sideways curvature is abnormal. From the back, the spine should appear straight. When scoliosis is present, there are usually two curves. A primary curve in one direction and a compensatory curve in the opposite direction.
  • Isn’t scoliosis caused by a lack of calcium?
No. However, there are a growing number of people who believe uncorrected spinal damage from the birth process may be involved. Some theorize that “walkers” may prematurely interrupt the crawling stage so essential for proper spinal development.
  • Do heavy back-packs cause scoliosis?
Not necessarily, however this is a growing concern. Make sure your son or daughter use both shoulder straps on their back-packs so the weight is evenly distributed. Weigh their bag. Make sure it doesn’t exceed 10% -15% of their body weight.
